Conference Presentation
February 5-7, 2026
This conference will gather scholars, artists, and practitioners to explore the languages and non-languages of clowns and their connection to sound and performance. It coincides with the world premiere of Ana Sokolović’s opera Clown(s) at the Opéra de Montréal. Clowns employ unconventional languages—gestures, invented speech, and subversive forms—that challenge norms, embodying both marginality and resistance. Across forms from circus performers to slapstick cinema, they reflect the tension between power, taboo, and non-conformity.

Collaboration with MoA
We’re transforming the tufted rug we’ve been co-creating on Tuesday nights into a graphic score—and you’re invited to help bring it to life with your voice. No sheet music, no pressure—just an open invitation to get loud, curious, and a little experimental. Led by the Circus Opera Company, this workshop is all about interpreting shape, texture, and color through sound and collective performance.
